Fasting

Once a year, Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. It is a time for calm, self-discipline and closeness to God — and for many, one of the finest times of the year.

What fasting is

To fast means to abstain from food, drink and intimacy from dawn to sunset. You eat an early meal before dawn, and break the fast at sunset — often with a date and water, as the Prophet ﷺ did.

More than not eating

Fasting is as much about the heart as the stomach. It is a time to be patient, to give to others, to read the Quran and to break bad habits.

In Norway the summer days can be very long. There is room for adjustment, and the sick, travellers, the pregnant and others are exempt. Do ask for advice if you are unsure.

Your first Ramadan

Your first Ramadan as a convert can feel big. Take it slowly, set realistic goals, and seek community — breaking the fast together with others is a joy many remember for the rest of their lives.
