How to become a Muslim

Becoming a Muslim is simpler than many people think. It does not require a ceremony, a fee, or that you feel “ready” — only a sincere heart.

What does it mean to become a Muslim?

To be a Muslim means to surrender to God — Allah in Arabic — and to find peace in that. The word “Islam” itself means peace and surrender.

You become a Muslim by pronouncing the declaration of faith, called the shahada, and meaning it from the heart. In that moment you are a Muslim, and everything you have done before is wiped clean. You begin with a fresh page.

The declaration of faith (shahada)

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasūlu-llāh

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His messenger.

You may say it in English if you do not yet know Arabic — the meaning is what matters most.

You do not need to be perfect

A common misunderstanding is that you must be able to pray, fast and read Arabic before you can become a Muslim. That is not true. You learn all of this gradually, at your own pace.

God sees your heart, not a flawless performance. The only thing required at the start is sincerity.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Prepare your heart

It is nice, but not required, to perform ghusl — a full-body wash — as a sign of a new beginning. What matters most is that you want this sincerely.

  2. 2

    Say the declaration of faith

Pronounce the shahada aloud, in Arabic or in English. You can do it alone, or with witnesses in a mosque if you wish.

  3. 3

    You are a Muslim

In this moment you are a Muslim. It is common to feel relief, joy — and maybe a few tears. All of that is normal.

  4. 4

Take one step at a time

Begin to learn the prayer and the basics calmly. Use the guide, ask questions, and feel free to find a community nearby.

What happens next?

The first days as a Muslim are a good time to be gentle with yourself. Here are some good first steps:

Learn the prayer

Prayer is your daily connection to God. Begin with one prayer, then build from there.

Get to know the faith

Read the guide calmly. You do not need to memorise everything — it comes with time.

Find community

Reach out to a local mosque or a convert group. It makes the road much easier.

Common questions

Do I have to change my name?

No. You keep your name unless it means something that contradicts the faith. Many converts keep their name for life.

Do I have to go to a mosque to convert?

No. You can say the shahada anywhere. Many still choose to do it in a mosque to receive an official certificate and meet the community.

What about my family?

Telling your family can be hard. Take the time you need, be kind, and seek support from others who have been through the same.

I have a difficult past — does it matter?

No. When you become a Muslim, you start anew. Your past does not follow you into your new life.
